Books & E-books

Most of the print books for your course can be found in the stress and grief (shelf mark 155.9), meditation (shelf mark 158.1), health and fitness (shelf mark 612 and above) and mental health (shelf mark 616.8 and above) sections of the LLC. Please contact us if you need further information.

All books on health and wellbeing can be found in the LLC catalogue.

The LLC also has a selection of ‘English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)’ books, a variety of fiction books and a range of Mental Health Foundation “How to…” guides. These can also be downloaded for free from The Mental Health Foundation.

E-books for health and wellbeing can be found on the catalogue or through our providers E-book Central, VLe Books and E-books for Further Education. Further e-books are available through the 'Useful websites and Open Access resources' section above.

If asked, select UK Federation login, Home Institution and/or Shibboleth, enter New College Lanarkshire then log on to the resources using your college username and password.

General Information

The LLC offers quiet spaces for study, relaxing, or reading.

Motherwell Campus LLC has a silent study room with 12 work spaces in it. Cumbernauld Campus LLC offers bookable study rooms, silent study spaces and a reading nook. All our study spaces have power points for using your own devices.

All students may borrow up to 6 items for up to 4 weeks. Loan periods may be extended if no one else has requested the items. Renewals can be made in person, by phone, email or via the catalogue.  Items can be reserved through our 'Click and Collect' facility on the catalogue.

Multifunctional print devices are available in each campus LLC, for black and white and colour printing, photocopying and scanning to email, and students are provided with print credit automatically at the start of the semester.

Computers in the LLCs can be booked for personal study through the 'Book a PC' link at the very top of this page, or through the 'MyNCL' app.

Journals

Journals provide up-to-date information about a subject. In addition to the print titles we hold, we have access to many online titles on Gale News, Business and Reference and Emerald Insight.

Complete Issues

Articles, statistics, personal accounts and links to websites on a wide range of topics. For Complete Issues username and password, click above. You may need to log into Moodle using the button at the top right of the screen and enter your college username and password. Alternatively, ask at the library desk.

Emerald Insight

Global publisher with a large portfolio of online journals and books.

Gale News, Business and Reference

Access to a large range of online reference materials including journals, newspaper archives and e-books.

Issues Online

The online version of the Donnellan Issues series that includes key facts, statistics and articles on a wide range of topical issues.

National Library of Scotland

A range of databases from the National Library of Scotland. They cover many subject areas and include e-books, newspapers, journals, audio-visual resources and images. You need to register on the website to gain access to the resources.

Very Short Introductions

Expert authors combine facts, analysis, new insights, and enthusiasm to offer concise and original introductions to a wide range of subjects.

Breathing Space

Breathing Space is a free, confidential, phone service for anyone in Scotland over the age of 16 experiencing low mood, depression or anxiety. They are there in times of difficulty to provide a safe and supportive space by listening, offering advice and providing information. Call free on 0800 83 85 87 (Available Weekdays: Monday-Thursday 6pm to 2am, Weekend: Friday 6pm-Monday 6am).

Childline

Childline is available to help anyone under 19 in the UK with any issue they’re going through. You can talk about anything. Whether it’s something big or small, trained counsellors are there to support you. Childline is free, confidential and available any time, day or night. Call free on 0800 1111.  You can also contact them through their website for Email or 1-2-1 counsellor chat.

COPEScotland is a website where you can access free well-being tips, videos, audio files and courses.

Mental Health Foundation

Charitable organisation that provides information, carries out research, and campaigns to improve services for people affected by mental health problems.

Mental Health Scotland

This website includes information about the activity that the Scottish Government is currently undertaking to improve mental health in Scotland.

Mental Health Welfare Commission for Scotland

Mental Health Welfare Commission for Scotland is an organisation which protects and promotes the human rights of people with mental illness, learning disabilities, dementia and related conditions.

Advice on dealing with low mood, anxiety, phobias, stress and where you can get help.

NHS Mindfulness

Paying more attention to the present moment – to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you – can improve your mental wellbeing. Some people call this awareness "mindfulness". Mindfulness can help us enjoy life more and understand ourselves better. You can take steps to develop it in your own life.

Samaritans

Samaritans are there, day or night, for anyone who’s struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure. Samaritans is not only for the moment of crisis, but to help take action to prevent the crisis. They give people ways to cope and the skills to be there for others. They offer listening and support to people and communities in times of need. Call for free on 116 123.

Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH)

SAMH is Scotland’s national mental health charity, providing mental health social care support, services in primary care, schools and further education, among others.
